China's consumption heats up in May: commerce ministry

China saw an apparent warm-up in consumption last month, boosted by a nationwide month-long consumption promotion campaign, according to the Ministry of Commerce (MOC).

The trade volume of goods and services in the country reached 4.82 trillion yuan (about 754.82 billion U.S. dollars) in May, up 22.8 percent year on year, MOC spokesperson Gao Feng told a press conference Thursday.

Over 200,000 enterprises have participated in the campaign, which started on May 1, said the MOC.

The nine offshore duty-free shops in China's southern island province of Hainan saw their sales growing by 159 percent year on year, official data showed.

This year's activities have promoted a consumption upgrade in the country, said Gao, adding that China's effective control of the COVID-19 epidemic also helped accelerate the resumption of consumption activities in the country.
