Chinese Ambassador Raises Concerns Over UK's Remarks on Hong Kong Law Enforcement

On July 13, Ambassador Zheng Zeguang took a strong stance against the UK government's wrongful words and actions regarding Hong Kong. In a démarche with a relevant UK official from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, Ambassador Zheng expressed deep dissatisfaction and firm opposition. He emphasized that the UK has neither the position nor the right to make irresponsible remarks concerning the law enforcement actions of the Hong Kong SAR police. He further urged the UK to gain a clear understanding of the situation, rectify its wrongdoing, and cease interfering in Hong Kong-related affairs and China's internal matters.

Chinese Ambassador Zheng Zeguang has highlighted the legitimacy of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) police's arrest warrants and law enforcement actions against anti-China elements. According to Ambassador Zheng, these measures are implemented in compliance with the law and serve as necessary steps to uphold the rule of law, stability, and prosperity in Hong Kong. However, he criticized the UK for criticizing the actions of the Hong Kong SAR police, publicly supporting these anti-China elements, and providing them with a safe haven. The Ambassador argued that the UK's actions blurred the lines between right and wrong, exhibited a disregard for the rule of law, and amounted to significant interference in China's internal affairs. He further asserted that such actions constituted serious violations of international law and basic norms governing international relations.

Ambassador Zheng Zeguang has highlighted the positive outcomes since the implementation of the National Security Law in Hong Kong. He emphasized that the region has achieved social harmony, stability, and economic recovery, while also experiencing enhanced protection of the rights and freedoms of its people. According to Ambassador Zheng, Hong Kong has entered a new phase of restoration and is poised for a thriving future.

The Ambassador emphasized that Hong Kong is an integral part of China and that all matters related to the region are solely China's internal affairs. He underlined that China's governance of Hong Kong is based on its Constitution and the Basic Law of the Hong Kong SAR, not the Sino-British Joint Declaration. Ambassador Zheng asserted that the UK holds no sovereignty, jurisdiction, or "supervisory" rights over Hong Kong after its return to China.

Urging the UK to abandon its outdated colonial mindset, Ambassador Zheng called for a comprehensive understanding of the situation. He appealed to the UK to refrain from any words or actions that undermine the rule of law in Hong Kong and interfere in China's internal affairs.
