1. Out-of-hours: An Introduction to China

British Museum Great Court

At the Sir Joseph Hotung Gallery of China and South Asia (Room 33), you will gain an insight into the development of the Chinese civilization, from 5000 BC to the present day, in this beautifully refurbished recently re-opened space. From Ming dynasty blue-and-white porcelain to Buddhist sculptures, this introductory tour will give you a deep appreciation of the magnificent objects on display.

2. China Town Stories: The Community-Led Walking Tour

China Town

Discover the fascinating stories and characters behind this iconic district and gain a whole new perspective on London’s Chinatown! Trained volunteer History Champions from China Exchange will take you on a journey through this area’s complex, nuanced and fascinating evolution. The 2.5hr experience includes a delicious Chinese lunch served family-style, giving you the chance to get to know your guide and learn more.

3. Chinese Lantern Making

Red Lantern

Chinese lanterns are an ancient Han traditional handicraft. Their origins can be traced back to the Western Han dynasty more than 2100 years ago. Every year, around the Lantern Festival on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, people hang red lanterns that symbolise reunion to create a festive atmosphere. Come and help create LED-lit lanterns to decorate your home in celebration of Chinese New Year.

4. Lunar New Year: Year of the Tiger

Bristol Museum

Welcome in the Year of the Tiger with live performances and activities. Watch traditional Chinese dances and martial arts demonstrations, and participate in various activities to learn about Chinese and Korean culture. You can also buy beautiful Chinese goods for sale in the shop. During the celebrations, pick up one of the tiger detective trail maps to search for tigers hidden throughout the museum!

5. An Introduction to Chinese Brush Painting

Painting and Calligraphy by Tang Yin, a famous Chinese ancient artist

In this friendly, inclusive workshop for absolute beginners, you will complete a painting in the traditional style using Chinese brushes, paper, ink and watercolours. All materials will be provided, all you need to bring is your enthusiasm!

6. Spirit of the Orient at Robin Hill

Celebrate the vibrancy, colour and flavours of Chinese New Year! 2022 sees the celebration of the Year of the Tiger. The evenings will see a vibrant fusion of sound, colour, illuminations and flavours merging to create a truly immersive experience. Featuring impressive light exhibits, large-scale inflatable displays, an interactive dragon procession, lion dances and plenty of activities to keep the kids entertained, the park will truly come alive in celebration of Chinese New Year.

7. Asian Art at Chiswick Auctions

Chiswick Auctions’ Asian Art Department has experienced exponential growth since its founding and has gained a reputation as one of the top destinations in the UK for the sale of Chinese, Japanese, Tibetan, Korean and Southeast Asian artworks. The May and November sales coincide with Asian Art week, whilst the smaller February and September sales are popular among collectors. The sales feature ceramics, jade, bronzes, plus artworks in cloisonné, enamel, and wood showcasing Asian art from across key dynasties and periods.

8. Chinese Astronomy

Join this brand-new live planetarium show to explore aspects of ancient and modern Chinese astronomy, including the Sun, Moon, stars and space exploration, guided by an astronomer from the Royal Observatory Greenwich. In this show, the astronomer will explore the links between astronomy and the Chinese calendar, such as the phases of the Moon and how they relate to traditional festivals still celebrated by Chinese people today. They will also look at several modern constellations that are prominent in the sky during the current season and compare them to their ancient Chinese counterparts. And no show on Chinese astronomy would be complete without a discussion of the latest achievements of the nation’s space programme, from the soft landing on the far side of the Moon to the mission to Mars.

9. Asian Flavours with Ken Hom

This year, the phenomenal Ken Hom has agreed to headline the Sunday night of the Stroud Festival of Food and Drink and you will be receiving the full culinary treatment as Ken will be cooking fantastic Asian food, whilst also entertaining the audience, after which he will host an enlightening Question and Answer session, finishing off with a book signing. Ken Hom OBE is the chef who showed the British how to cook Asian food. A leading authority on Chinese cuisine, he is also one of the most respected and celebrated TV chefs of all time.

10. China Britain Trade Expo

The China Britain Trade Expo 2022 brings together business leaders from the UK and China to do business at London's Congress Centre. The delegation will gather to discuss new trade and export opportunities, share best practices, forge new deals and partnerships, and meet government representatives from the relevant international territories. The event takes place at a pivotal time for British business and industry, when new global markets and opportunities will be explored on an unprecedented scale.
