Shanghai's 'plum rain' precipitation hits 20-year high

The prolonged rainy season in Shanghai this year ended on Tuesday, with the total rainfall for the period the highest this century.

Shanghai entered its rainy season, known as "plum rain" in China, on June 9, eight days earlier than usual. The plum rain season often features several weeks of wet weather and high temperatures.

The latest data from the Shanghai meteorological service showed that this year's rainy season lasted for 42 days, about 19 days longer than that in normal years.

As of 8 p.m. Monday, the average precipitation during the plum rain season in Shanghai reached 533 mm, 2.4 times the average rainfall during the rainy season and the highest since 2000.

Weather forecasts show that Shanghai will brace for hot spells with thundershowers in the coming days, and the maximum temperature may reach as high as 36 degrees Celsius.
