The species mainly inhabits lakes, reservoirs and marshes, usually living with other wild ducks and feeding on roots, leaves, stems and seeds of aquatic plants.

Fuhe Wetland Park is rich in water resources and boasts a good ecological environment, attracting tens of thousands of migratory birds from Northeast China and Siberia here for winter every year. 

The Bagongtang wetland park has been a popular place for citizens to relax as the ecological rehabilitation project was accomplished recently.

Kicked off on March 18, 2019, the project aimed to effectively rehabilitate the ecological systems including mangrove forests along the seashore of Dongzhaigang so that migrant birds in the country may find better habitats in winter time.

Great efforts have been made in recent years to restore the ecological environment around the lake.
